About the Book

These Are The Times That Try Men's Souls will be published in September by Cornerstone Books in New Orleans. It will be about 300 pages, with more than 200 of Thomas Paine's quotes connected to modern national and international crises by sidebar comments on current issues. The book will also discuss the life and times of Paine, and the reasons for the incredible success of his first two books, Common Sense and The American Crisis.

Since about two-thirds of all Americans were illiterate at the time, most learned what Paine had written about America not by reading his works, but by hearing them read in taverns, parks, and other public places.  The book discusses why Paine's writings were especially powerful when experienced by hearing them.
